The Half Hull Model

The ship's half hull model has been used for centuries as a way of designing a vessel's hull. Today most boats are designed using computers or at least they start on the drafting board as a profile design.

An exception to this is Peter Kass at John's Bay Boat Co. who still carves a half model to design his boats. These models are then divided into station sections and the measurements from centerline and baseline can be made into a full scale table of offsets. This table of measurements is then used to loft the boat full size on the shop floor. It is from this full size lofting that patterns can be made for the different backbone sections and molds can be built.

Half hull models always make a great gift and look great on any wall. Please contact me if you're interested in having one custom made.
